Pesach – A Living Tradition

The program is meant to provide participants with alternate and interesting perspectives on the themes of the Passover Seder. Participants will become acquainted with a selection of the Biblical and Talmudic passages dealing with Passover, as well as presenting the themes of Passover in a modern light.

Slavery: Beyond the Seder Plate

Enslavement and freedom are themes central to our Passover Seder. Yet the topics themselves transcend our own communal slavery experience. Punctuated with the symbols on the traditional Seder plate, this program delves into the bitterness of our enslavement in Egypt; the institution of slavery throughout history, including the modern day; enslavement of our self-esteem and self-worth to simple opinions and pressures; enslavement to materialism over generosity; and enslavement to addictive behaviors … plus issues concerning the freedom from each!

The Visitor

Then Eliahu remembered the words that a prophet, called Malachi, had said about him some years back: “Look! The prophet Eliahu is before you...." Apparently, some could not see him. As legend has it, he simply gave the impression of being like any other person and allowed himself to be invited. Thus, those who opened their doors to receive him, without knowing it, were opening the doors of the transcendental.

Focusing on the custom of receiving guests at the Seder table, the author proposes accompanying a very special personage as he stops by at three Sedarim in three different ages. Let’s pull up a chair and see how this mysterious visitor is received!

Two Before Purim, Two Before Pesach: Arba Parshiot

This project offers a pathway of exploration through the construction of the identity of our people. By means of looking at the combination of the Arba Parshiot, four special readings in the weeks before Purim and Pesach, we learn about the strengths and limitations of each community member; the responsibility of each person to the other; the purity that allows us to reenter the Mikdash and get on with the business of living in a world in which G-d’s presence is expressed in our ancient objective of becoming a holy nation.

From Z’man Heiruteinu to Z’man Matan Torateinu: Learning to Live as Free People Responsibly

The purpose of these lessons is to look at a larger theme of the entire season that spans from Pesach through Shavuot, namely that of learning and committing ourselves to live as free people responsibly. Freedom is first and foremost a responsibility as well as a privilege. Too often we, especially during high school years, forget that. For that reason, this learning unit is suggested and specifically designed for older student groupings as a supplement to normative seasonal units, who can give serious consideration to these deep issues and their ramifications for living a productive life.
